How to Save Money Without Giving Up Too Much
71You can save money each year without needing to give up too many of the things you love. It is not necessary to be extremely frugal in order to save a few hundred dollars or more each year. Sometimes by just having a little less, you can save a lot.
If your family enjoys going on vacation to other states but does not usually have the time or money to travel overseas, you have options to save even more money during your time off by staying closer to home. These ideas are less likely to work if you are used to traveling to other countries.
Plan trips to cities where friends and family live. You can ask your friends and family members if you can bring your family to stay at their house for a few days. If you are not traveling too far from home, you might even plan a weekend trip or a long weekend. This will give your family a chance to get away without imposing on your friends or loved ones for too long. Visit the best sites in the towns and cities where your loved ones live.
Take the time to enjoy your local community and surrounding communities. Most towns and cities whether they are large or small, offer great things to see and do. You might not always take the time to appreciate some of the attractions and activities available in your local area. Plan some day and weekend trips for your family. Spend your vacation exploring your local area and even spending some quiet time at home with your family. Just remember that this is still a vacation and you should not work during your time off.
Save money on your cellular service bill. You might find that you are paying for minutes that you do not even use. You can save a couple hundred dollars each year by downgrading to a plan that more closely matches your minute usage. Consider one of the many prepaid monthly plans that are now available. Providers such as Boost Mobile and Straighttalk offer plans for $50 per month or less with unlimited minutes, text messaging, and Internet usage. Some of the prepaid services do not offer the fanciest phones and all the applications that you can gain with regular phone services. However, the savings might be worth foregoing some of the bells and whistles that you do not really need anyway.
If you do have a plan with unlimited minutes including national calling, you should consider giving up your home phone service. You can save several hundred dollars per month if you do not need to worry about paying for local and long distance home service. This is a service that you do not really need if you have unlimited talk time and coverage to all the areas you call most on your cell phone.
Watch movies at home rather than heading out to the movie theatre. You will save a great deal of money by having movie nights at home. You can rent a movie or join Netflix for about $9 per month. With Netflix, you can now stream many movies to your computer or even to your Nintendo Wii. You will pay less for an entire month’s worth of movies than you would pay for one night at the movie theatre.
Drop the premium channels on your Cable or Satellite TV service if you hardly ever watch them. If you find that you have hundreds of channels and still cannot find anything to watch on TV, you should also consider dropping down to a more basic package. It is not worth the extra money to pay for channels that you rarely use or a lineup that is still not offering you the shows that you want to see the most.
If you have a habit of eating out a lot with your family, cut back on at least one or two meals out per month. Even if you still eat out a lot, you can save a few hundred dollars each month by eating at home one or two more times per month than usual. Make a family night where you all cook a meal together as a family. You will save money while gaining some quality time with your family.
There are some rather simple things you can do in order to save several hundred dollars (or more) each year. Most of these things will not make any real impact on your lifestyle or your standard of living. Why not give a few ideas a try?

You gave some good suggestions on how to save money. Another idea is choose one day a week and do a "lights out" day. Don't use any lights at all. Try to use natural sunlight during the day, then flashlights (rechargeable are best) or candles at night. Doing this just one day a week will eventually add up and could possibly save you hundreds a year on your electricity bill.
